Dr. Tom Obertynski, a Metro-Detroiter, earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and went on to complete his masters’ and medical degree at Wayne State University.  Dr. Obertynski then completed his ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit.  Upon completion of his residency, he stayed on to finish subspecialty training in glaucoma and advanced cataract surgery techniques at the Kresge Eye Institute.

Dr. Obertynski is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.  He additionally serves as the Co-Director of the Glaucoma department at The Beaumont Eye Institute.  Dr. Obertynski, enjoys teaching and is actively involved in both the clinical and surgical training of future ophthalmologists.  In fact, Dr. Obertynski has been honored in the past as the “Teacher of the Year” by the residents of the Beaumont Eye Institute when he was awarded the distinguished Raymond R. Margherio, MD Teaching Award.

Dr. Obertynski  specializes in the medical and surgical management of complex glaucoma as well as complex cataract surgery.  He offers the most advanced techniques in glaucoma surgical care, such as lasers, micro invasive procedures (MIGs) and traditional surgeries for refractory glaucoma.  Dr. Obertynski is also pleased to offer custom cataract solutions, helping to restore your sight.  He offers laser assisted cataract surgery along with advanced technology lens options that will allow you to see at both near and far.

Dr. Obertynski is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology; he is also a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the American Glaucoma Society.

On a personal note, Dr. Obertynski enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys.  As a result of his boys, he is becoming a soccer fan.  In his spare time, he loves to ski and travel.  He is a car enthusiast and is an avid Indycar and Formula 1 race fan. For better or worse, he is also a Detroit Lions fan.
